ADI successfully revitalized Frenchman’s Reef Resort in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands, following Hurricane Irma and the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in a $425 million transformation and reopening in 2023.
The Challenge
In 2017, the Frenchman’s Reef Resort in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands, faced a severe setback when it was devastated by Hurricane Irma, causing extensive damage to both the resort’s buildings and its grounds. In 2018, ADI was engaged by Kollin/Altomari to provide aquatic consulting for this project, including a thorough site analysis. However, the restoration project was further complicated by the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020.

ADI’s Solution
Tasked with the responsibility of determining the extent of repairs and equipment/system replacements required, ADI embarked on a mission to revitalize the aquatic elements of the Frenchman’s Reef Resort. The consulting team, in collaboration with contractors, conducted site visits to assess the damage and provide guidance on the steps for restoring and upgrading the aquatic facilities.
ADI’s recommendations included repairing certain existing pools and the installation of several new pools and spas. These recommendations were based on a comprehensive analysis of the site’s needs and the resort’s objectives
Outcome
The culmination of a dedicated and collaborative effort by a team of design professionals, led by Kollin/Altomari Architects, resulted in a spectacular transformation of the Frenchman’s Reef Resort. The $425,000,000 revamp, carried out during the spring and summer of 2023, breathed new life into this exceptional treasure of the island of St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands.
Following the restoration project, the resort leadership was able to reopen both the main resort and its sister property, the Morningstar Buoy Haus Beach Resort. The revival of the resort, coupled with the refurbishment and enhancement of its pools, spas, and water features, received positive feedback and early reviews that celebrated the remarkable transformation. The resort’s reopening was not only a testament to its resilience but also a source of pride for the St. Thomas community and a welcome retreat for guests seeking a renewed and rejuvenated experience.
